HEARD is pleased to welcome new post-doctoral research fellow Dr Roselyn Kanyemba, who recently obtained her PhD in anthropology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Kanyemba will be working with HEARD Research Director Dr Kaymarlin Govender on the subject area of masculinities and HIV.

As part of HEARD’s commitment to investing in the development of African scholars, we are offering PhD Scholarships for 2020. The scholarship is aimed producing expertly qualified graduates to advise or to be part of influential policy-making or programme implementing entities in Africa, and to pursue additional research priorities.

Applications are invited from citizens of all African countries. Female candidates and, in the case of South Africa, those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, are especially encouraged to apply.

HEARD recently shared its expertise at a training workshop on ‘translating scientific research for policy and decision makers’. HEARD’s Gender-based Violence (GBV) research cluster is currently working on a number of studies aimed at understanding the intersections of risk and vulnerability for GBV across a range of populations and contexts, including institutions of higher education, amongst female migrants and refugees and in contexts of transactional sex and sex-work. GBV is linked with a host of poor SRH and mental health outcomes, including risk of HIV, unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion and depression.

A conference abstract whose authors include two HEARD researchers, has been recognised by the International AIDS Society (IAS) as one of the highest scoring at their recent annual conference.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Marcia Mutambara, who has joined HEARD as a post-doctoral research fellow. Mutambara recently graduated with her PhD in Conflict Transformation and Peace Studies from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, focusing on gender, sexuality, migration and human security.
