Young women and social grants: issues of access and impact

Overview:

Access to social grants in South Africa has expanded rapidly. Increasing evidence shows the powerful impact for children’s health and wellbeing that can occur if households access social grants. The Stepping Stones and Creating Futures intervention found that only an estimated 50% of women eligible for accessing the child support grant for their children did so and the intervention only had a marginal impact on increasing young women’s access to the grant.

Objectives:

  • To understand barriers to accessing social grants
  • To develop a module to include in the Stepping Stones and Creating Futures intervention.

Methodological approach:

In-depth interviews with 30 young women with children who are eligible to receive the Child Support Grant (CSG).
