Introduction
The aim of this workshop is to provide professionals with an update on HIV and AIDS, Public Health and Development. This workshop is aimed at professionals working in HIV, Public Health or Development in southern Africa.
Course Content
Understanding HIV and AIDS in southern Africa - Alan WhitesideThis section will cover:
- The HIV epidemic in southern and eastern Africa including basic epidemiology.
- The Three Curves and big challenges; the global view of the epidemic
- National governments, regional organisations, private sector and donors
- HIV, public health and development
- Research into policy
- Ethics of research
AIDS and development - does it matter? - Pranitha Maharaj
It is increasingly becoming clear that AIDS is going to impact on development planning but is the impact likely to be as severe as initial projections suggested? This section will cover:
- An overview of the impact of AIDS - globally and southern and eastern Africa.
- Key Development Indicators: The impact of AIDS on development
- The challenges for individuals and households
- Case studies: What are some of the lessons that can be learnt?
The response to AIDS and role of public health - Christina Zarowsky
- This section will cover the health sector and public health responses to HIV/AIDS in the region, including capacity and intersectoral challenges to managing complexity and ongoing change.
- Health systems and policy: scaling up and integrating context-responsive prevention, treatment and care
- Health services and implementation: challenges and innovations on the front lines
- Beyond health: primary prevention in unequal societies
