Ilaria joined HEARD in November 2010 on a fellowship from the Overseas Development Institute (ODI). Her current research investigates the extent to which South Africa’s social protection landscape is sensitive to the needs of HIV-affected households. She is also a member of a project looking into the presence of behavioural dis-inhibition following medical circumcision, a key HIV prevention measure and national policy in South Africa. During her two-year term at HEARD, she coordinates the Economics Reference Group, an advisory body to UNAIDS and the World Bank on economic aspects of the epidemic.
Ilaria holds a BA in Social and Political Studies from University College London (UK) and a Master’s in International Economics and Health from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). Before joining HEARD, she worked for two years as a member of the Health, Nutrition and Population team of the World Bank. There, she participated in a long-term project designed to subsidise health insurance coverage for economically vulnerable groups in Vietnam, and in other initiatives of the East Asia region. She also spent time at the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Geneva, where she worked on issues of tuberculosis and the procurement of drugs to cure it.
