Alison Misselhorn joined HEARD as a Senior Researcher in January 2009. Alison Misselhorn was awarded a PhD from the University of Witwatersrand for her work on food security in southern Africa. She has specific expertise in research and analysis in food security, adaptation to climate change, environmental change and global change, building human resilience to chronic as well as acute livelihood stressors, sustainable development and vulnerability. She was contributing author to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment in 2004, and to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Report, which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore. Consulting work prior to joining HEARD has included research and the management of multi-disciplinary teams, including two comprehensive reports on community adaptation and vulnerability to climate change in the Umkhanyakude district for Oxfam-Australia.
Similarly she was a team member of evaluation of the UK Department for International Development (DFID)/ International Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Mid Term Review of Climate Change Adaptation in Africa Programme (CCAA). At HEARD she is involved in a variety of work, including leading the Youth, HIV/AIDS, Food Security and Urbanisation. This project aims to investigate how HIV and AIDS affect the food security of the youth living in formal and informal settlements in urban areas of Durban and Blantyre, how this age group responds to livelihood threats, and what makes some less vulnerable than others.
