Marisa Casale joined HEARD as a Researcher in 2005. She has a degree in Economics and Banking Science from the University of Siena (Italy), a Masters in Rural Development Studies, from the University of Padua (Italy; 2004), and is currently a doctoral candidate with the Department of Psychology at the University of Cape Town. Marisa has also been a Visiting Scholar at the University of Natal (1998) and at Cambridge University (1999). Her previous professional experience includes working as a credit analyst for an Italian development bank, as well as lecturing and working in micro-finance. Since joining HEARD, Marisa has been involved in and has coordinated various projects, including: research on the socio-economic impacts of HIV/AIDS for the Canadian International Development Research Corporation (IDRC); participation in the core working group of a Scenario Building Project with Metropolitan Life AIDS Solutions; co-ordination of the HEARD/UNAIDS 2006 Research Symposium; co-ordination of the South African field research for the multi-country 'Child Future Security' project, in collaboration with IFPRI. She has also co-lead a mixed-methods evaluation of a local school-based youth HIV prevention programme (n=809) with partners from the University of Toronto and York University, and is currently Project Manager and Co-Investigator of the 'Young Carers KwaZulu-Natal' project, a large health survey (n=5300) with children and caregivers, conducted in collaboration with the Universities of Oxford (U.K) and Brown (U.S.). Her research interests include HIV prevention amongst youth and the wellbeing of children and caregivers in the context of HIV and AIDS. |
