Project Started : April 2007
Project Ends : April 2010
Lead Researcher : Stephanie Nixon
Project Donor : JFA
Overview
The main goal of this project is to develop a deeper understanding of the linkages amongst economic globalisation, pro-poor growth and HIV/AIDS in order to illuminate opportunities for reducing vulnerability to HIV/AIDS.
Research Questions
To have a deeper understanding of the linkages among economic globalision, growth and HIV/AIDS in order to illuminate opportunities for reducing vulnerability to HIV/AIDS.
Strategic Questions
The project aspires to offer insights into the systemic interpretations of the pandemic and creating sustainable response systems by illuminating the ways that government and international policy can support growth and globalisation initiatives without putting people at additional risk of HIV/AIDS, as well as the effects of the pandemic on vulnerability in Africa, specifically for children, women and families by finding some case studies which deal, in particular, with the experiences of women and youth in risky work and social environments.
Expected Knock-On
The project recognises and builds on two related challenges: the lack of empirical evidence to contribute to the understanding of the interactions between economic globalisation, growth and vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, and the research design challenge of measuring these interactions.
Project Impact
To develop new knowledge about the linkages and interactions among economic globalisation, growth and vulnerability to HIV/AIDS; to develop new insights about how to assess and measure the interactions amongst economic globalisation, growth and vulnerability to HIV/AIDS; to inform strategies that facilitate pro-poor and inclusive growth that take account of the HIV/AIDS reality; to build capacity among case study investigators and selected junior researchers with respect to substantive and methodological issues in studying the linkages amongst economic globalisation, growth and HIV/AIDS; and to disseminate key policy messages emerging from this research to influential decision-makers at the national, regional and international level.
Brief Description
Beginning with a Request for Proposals, five research teams have been selected to perform an in-depth case study on a particular aspect of economic globalisation, growth and HIV/AIDS. These case studies will serve as evidence of the links between these factors and will be disseminated in scholarly articles, two symposia between researchers and among policy makers.
