Overview
An exploratory study which examined the links between the skilled labour shortage of the road freight industry in South Africa and the hiring of female truck drivers. The study included a photo-journalism component, the results of which were a photo-essay on women truck drvers who participated in the study.
Research Questions
The aim of this project is to inform policy makers, the private sector, and researchers about how the HIV-related skilled labour shortage is impacting on the road freight industry in South Africa, and specifically, how this phenomena is affecting the hiring of female drivers. The key research questions are:
- To what extent is the skilled labour shortage a major concern of employers in the road freigth industry in South Africa?
- To what extent is HIV/AIDS seen as a causal factor of the skilled labour shortage?
- Why are female truck drivers being trained and employed?
- How are companies adapting their policies and practices to hiring female truck drivers?
- What are the experiences of female truck drivers in this industry?
Strategic Questions
This project would address HEARD’s three strategic objectives in the following ways:
- Studying the extent which HIV/AIDS mortality is driving new employment of women in the trucking industry [Driving forces of the pandemic];
- Examining whether the hiring of women is an adequate substitution for the lost work force [Effective responses];
- Interrogating how vulnerable these women are, by virtue of both the inherent dangers of the trucking industry, and the specific risks of being a women in an isolated work environment [Vulnerability].
Expected Knock-On
This project will help generate a greater understanding of how HIV/AIDS is affecting the road freight industry in South Africa. It will also inform a greater understanding of specific adaptations that are required within the road freight industry in order to accommodate female truck drivers safely and effectively.
Project Impact
With this study, we aim to
- Increase awareness about the hiring of female drivers in the road freight industry in South Africa (among general public and road freight industry)
- Increase awareness about the impacts of HIV/AIDS on the road freight industry in South Africa (among general public and road freight industry)
