Professor Tim Quinlan joined HEARD as the Research Director in 2002. He is an anthropologist by training with a PhD from the University of Cape Town. He has worked extensively in the fields of environmental management and traditional political authority.

He brought to HEARD considerable experience in academic and applied research and training; notably, an understanding of designing and doing integrated research that is a foundation for multi-sectoral responses to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Since joining HEARD, he has assisted with developing the primary research orientation for HEARD, in addition to the organisation's extensive involvement in strategic planning in relation to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in and beyond south Africa.Tim has oversight of all projects at HEARD.
