Collaborating Centre  Latest Publications  Multi-media | HEARD 'Ethics for Researchers' Workshop Topics included the history and development of research ethics, the basic principles of ethical research, differences and similarities between social and biomedical research ethics, and the ethics review process at UKZN. A central feature of the workshop was extensive discussion of real case studies, taken from HEARD's research experience, as well as from the participants themselves. There was opportunity to discuss and debate the often controversial factors that arise during the course of clinical and field research, and compare experiences so as to learn from one other. The informal, conversational style of the workshop and the willingness of the participants to examine the contentious issues that they face made for very rich and interesting discussions.
Another major theme of the workshop was to convey the notion that ethics is not merely an add-on to a research proposal, but a thread that runs through and underpins the way a research project is conceptualised, presented and implemented. The workshop concluded with an informal ethics quiz, which was both highly entertaining and informative.
One more such workshop is planned for 2010 - which is already fully subscribed - and it is hoped that from 2011 workshop participants will be able to earn CPD points in addition to learning how to apply the ethical principles that should be woven into the fabric of all research.
