HEARD at the RATN HIV Capacity Building Summit

The Summit also aimed to build a consensus on a joint plan of action in the medium and long term in order to strengthen the response to HIV in eastern and southern Africa. Almost 280 delegates attended, and was an excellent opportunity to learn from and network with people from fellow capacity building organisations.

HEARD and partners Bethel Health Builders presented a research poster to showcase 'best practice' in the area of HIV/AIDS prevention activities in rural areas. 'Health Builders' are local people trained through Bethel Health Builders on site in rural or peri-urban marginalised communities. They conduct rapid tests for HIV/AIDS, malaria, diabetes, cholesterol and high blood pressure as needed for people who have limited access to health services. They also provide nutritional assessments and meal planning. Health Builders visit homes with their portable health screening equipment and rechargeable video players. They show a film which covers basic medical information as well as the informed consent issues around testing. Private stations are then set up, and people who have viewed the film are invited for testing. The full suite of tests is available at each private station. Stigma is reduced and HIV testing uptake has been excellent when carried out in this way. Results are given confidentially and referrals are made to the local clinic for treatment if necessary. These local Health Builders have an on-going relationship with their community where support can be provided on the various lifestyle issues.

The project is a 'best practice' because it is owned by the community, is cost effective and replicable in all areas across Africa. The animated videos ensure that correct medical information is presented in a simple and easy to understand format. Animations are downloadable onto cellphones, which ensures that information can be passed on easily and quickly. Due to the current success and expected growth of this project, HEARD and RATN have funded the production of animated films to be used by Health Builders and others.

This project was well received at the Summit with a high degree of interest from different partner countries.
