Collaborating Centre  Latest Publications  Multi-media | HEARD at SAHARASatande's poster entitled, Peer Education as a HIV Prevention Strategy: Perceptions of College Students in Durban, South Africa was a snap shot of her research which was conducted in 2007/2008 which sought to find out the best way of delivering AIDS education to the 18-24 year old demographic at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). She focused on this demographic as it has the highest prevalence of HIV in South Africa.
"For AIDS to be addressed successfully, a detailed and long-term strategy needs to be formed. Of the many merits of such a long-term strategy that is needed for a disease such as AIDS, there is one glaring drawback; that of audience fatigue" said Satande.
"People are bombarded with AIDS awareness messages almost all the time which makes them desensitised to hearing about AIDS each and every day. They are therefore more likely to 'switch off' to its message after a prolonged time," she added.
The focus of the SAHARA Conference was on the social and cultural aspects of the epidemic, as opposed to the bio-medical ones. An important feature is its strong African focus, where heavyweights and decision makers from all over the world came to discuss, analyse and put into perspective the plight of HIV/AIDS in Africa.
