Health Builder Graduation in Zululand

Imagine you live in the rural village of Ekuphumuleni, in Zululand. In this village and five neighbouring villages, about 15% of people are HIV positive, 30% have hypertension and 10% adult diabetes. Transport to clinics for screenings is almost impossible, and consequently many of your neighbours are unaware of their treatable health conditions. Thanks to the innovative collaboration begun earlier this year between HEARD, the Regional AIDS Training Network (RATN), Bethel Health Builders and the Izulu Orphan Project, a local solution is answering this need.

On 3 September 2011, 28 women and one man from six villages in the area graduated from the health builder training programme and received certificates in a ceremony attended by over 400 people. Five graduated from the blood pressure training programme, and 24 from the full scope of blood pressure, diabetes, nutrition and HIV and AIDS screening and referral programmes.

"The event was emotionally significant for the community, family members, friends and children cheering on the newly graduated health builders," said Dr Rick Gutierrez of Bethel Health Builders. "We were told that none of them ever had any formal graduation ceremonies, so this event had special significance. At their own expense, the graduates arranged to rent their own gowns for the day," added Gutierrez.

Currently, 18 of these health builders are doing the full range of health screening and video-based community awareness-raising. The programme, under the auspices of HEARD and Bethel Health Builders, supplied the local health builders with portable equipment, screening devices and portable DVD players to carry out confidential screening activities in these underserved villages. Animated videos on HIV testing, stages of infection, and ARVs were produced to be used by health builders and other health promoters.

"The impact on the community has been substantial. Over the last three months, over 200 people learned their HIV positive status, with many now on ARV. Health builders have gained confidence and health skills, with one being considered for assistance with nursing education as the next step in her career development path," concluded Gutierrez.
