Collaborating Centre  Latest Publications  Multi-media | Giving grandmothers a voiceAccording to Chazan, older women are looking after ever-increasing numbers of sick and vulnerable people. "This is happening in a context where there is still huge stigma - often their children are not disclosing the status to them, and as a result, many report that they are not wearing gloves or adequately protecting themselves while providing care. Older women's stresses are compounded by inadequate housing, high levels of crime, chronic illnesses and domestic abuse. Indeed, my most recent research indicated that grandmother caregivers are undergoing physical, emotional and financial abuse from those in their care. The impacts of AIDS comes on top of and compounds this existing violence, poverty and illness."
