Knowledge Advancement
Knowledge Advancement and Education refers to HEARD training agenda. In the past, HEARD created and ran short courses for professionals whose work required an understanding of how to plan HIV/AIDS interventions. We have since redefined our training agenda, exploring ideas and opportunities to broaden HEARD's scientific and educational role. In practice, this means that we will continue to provide short courses but modify topics and content in line with changing needs of professionals. For example, HEARD used to run a two-week ‘Planning for HIV/AIDS' course; currently we are developing a ‘Managing HIV/AIDS course'. In 2006, HEARD created an innovative (work team-based course) on ‘Mainstreaming HIV/AIDS'. On the academic front, we are exploring options for HEARD to support Master's and PHD research. We expect that other courses will evolve out of our own capacity building efforts and networking. For instance, HEARD is creating an ‘Ethics-in-research' course for its own researchers and research partners in eastern and southern Africa, which, in due course, is likely to evolve into an educational course that HEARD provides for other interested individuals and organisations.
