HEARD introduced internships in 2008. Appointment is on merit, for one year. The focus is on recruiting recently graduated Master's students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. We also accommodate interns from elsewhere, including countries beyond South Africa, subject to feasibility of establishing a link with the university of the applicant. Preference is given to applicants who have conducted HIV/AIDS-related research on topics in line with HEARD's research agenda and programmes.

HEARD also provides financial support for the research dissertation work of Honours and Master's students in the School of Economics, University of KwaZulu-Natal.
