Young Researchers Writing Workshop a Success

The Young Researchers Initiative - a HEARD project that aims to support young researchers from across southern and eastern Africa develop their research and publication skills - brought together 12 young researchers from across the region for a very successful workshop. Held from 3 - 7 May and facilitated by Prof Ronelle Carolissen (Stellenbosch), the workshop provided a 'how-to' approach to writing for publication in academic journals. It covered numerous topics including the politics of publication, on writing cover letters to journal editors, as well as how to select the correct journal to submit to.

The workshop however moved beyond simply being a 'how-to' with Prof Carolissen's focusing on working with the young researchers to map out an article for publication and beginning to write the article. Prof Carolissen will provide ongoing support to the 12 young researchers to allow them to develop their work into articles suitable for publication. In October 2010 the Young Researchers Initiative will bring Prof Carolissen and the researchers back together, allowing them to finalise their manuscripts for submission, and hopefully publication.
