HEARD Film Addresses MDG Issues
In April, HEARD's documentary Vukuzakhe - Arise and Build Yourself was screened at this year's Cineposible International Film Festival of Extremadura (Spain). Vukuzakhe, Arise and Build Yourself illustrates how a rural community project can make a difference while addressing the effects of HIV/AIDS, illiteracy and poverty.
The festival awards short films and documentaries which address Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) issues. HEARD's film was one of 22 films that were selected out of a total of 800 submissions and was screened in four different towns in Spain during the course of the festival.
In 2008, HEARD conducted research to evaluate the work of a community project in Underberg called Vukuzakhe. Vukuzakhe aims to reduce the spread of HIV among the youth in the area which has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world. It attempts to influence sexual decision making indirectly by including HIV issues in extra literacy and drama lessons. The evaluation of Vukuzakhe led to an action-research agenda which included the production of this short film.
