HEARD's Gender Project: Recent Developments
The Gender Project has two exciting recent developments. First, on 10 December 2009 the Project held its first Project Advisory Committee (PAC) meeting. The PAC is made up of four of the top thinkers on gender and HIV/AIDS in the region: Rachel Jewkes (Medical Research Council), Dean Peacock (Sonke Gender Justice), Sisonke Msimang (Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa) and Cheryl Potgeiter (Dean of Research, UKZN).
The PAC provides conceptual advice, strategic thinking and support for the Gender Project. It also ensures that the Gender Project is at the cutting edge of current thinking on gender and HIV/AIDS and is engaging with the most appropriate people, ensuring the Project has the greatest impact and influence in supporting African leadership. The meeting was a dynamic and lively event with the PAC sharing its views on the Project and activities, and assisting in shaping the Project's work. The PAC will be convened once a year for the life span of the project and will continue to provide input and advice throughout the year on an ad hoc basis.
The second development is that Susie Jolly will be spending three weeks at HEARD in September 2010 as a Visiting Fellow. Jolly convenes the Sexuality and Development Programme in the Participation, Power and Social Change team at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS). Together with Andrea Cornwall, they are spearheading IDS's work on sexuality. Jolly's work focuses on intersections between sexuality, gender and development, in particular promoting positive approaches to sexuality and rights to pleasure.
Jolly is co-editor of 'Sexuality Matters' IDS Bulletin (with Andrea Cornwall) and of the 'Gender and Sexuality' Cutting Edge Pack (with Pinar Ilkkaracan and Emily Esplen). She will spend the three weeks with HEARD, providing training and workshops on sex, sexuality and gender to HEARD staff, UKZN staff and leadership in the region.
