HEARD's Support in  Responding to Government's Call for Decisive Action Against HIV and AIDS

The last quarter of the year has been an extremely engaging and fulfilling term for the USAID-HEARD project team, which was established in October 2010 to provide technical support to the national Department of Basic Education to develop the Department’s response to HIV and AIDS. The Department of Basic Education Draft Integrated Strategy on HIV, STIS and TB 2012-2016 was developed in 2010 and further to the Deputy Minister announcing the Department’s intentions in March of this year, the team has engaged, together with key role-players from the Department in an extensive road show and consultative process on the Strategy.

The Strategy was taken across the nine provinces where one day workshops were facilitated with key role-players from within the provincial education departments, as well as a range of their key stakeholders and implementing partners. Participants included education officials, the Departments of Health and Social Development, union representatives, principals, learners, NGOs and CBOs and a range of development partners active within particular provinces.

A total of approximately 650 people participated in the provincial workshops. This process enabled not only critical dialogue on the Strategy, its content and its broader intentions, but also enabled provincial education departments to strengthen implementation partnerships. Most significantly, this process sends a message to the country at large that the Department of Basic Education is positioned to take its place as the country finalises its new National Strategic Plan on HIV, STIs and TB 2012-2016.

The USAID-HEARD a project team will close offices at the end of December 2011. The team has worked tirelessly, with much passion and commitment, and HEARD would like to thank them and wish them well in their future endeavours.
