Representations of Gender and Sexuality

The role of the media in creating knowledge about and shaping responses to gender and sexuality is the focus of this work. Drawing on diverse approaches, the project explores how the media in South Africa represents the ‘problem’ of gender and HIV and in turn how forms of media can be used to create alternative representations.

Media Representations

The media has a powerful impact on shaping understandings of the drivers of HIV and gender inequality. From newspapers to television, the media provides us with information about HIV, but also constructs knowledge about how to respond appropriately.

Current research explores how gender based violence is represented in newspapers. Previous work includes representations of masculinity in the Daily Sun, and the representations of gender and HIV in the South African media.
