About Us

The Gender Programme aims to support regional excellence in gender and HIV. To enable African leadership to strengthen policies and interventions that tackle gender inequalities as a route to achieving HIV prevention in southern and eastern Africa, with a specific focus on community and structural level interventions.

The Programme has four strategic focal areas:

  • Research on gender equality and HIV prevention to inform policy and programmes
  • Strengthened HIV programmes and policies in southern and eastern Africa to tackle structural drivers of gender inequalities
  • Capacity building of African researchers focused on gender and HIV
  • Organisational strengthening around gender and HIV

The Gender Programme is a sub-programme of the Health Economics and HIV and AIDS Research Division (HEARD). It undertakes specific research and policy work around gender equality and HIV and AIDS.
