This research was commissioned by the Department for International Development ( DFID), and undertaken by HEARD and Training and Research Support Centre (TARSC). This global study - focusing on developing countries - used a Life Course approach to assess household level impacts of, and to inform interventions around, HIV and AIDS.

The research provided a detailed analysis of existing data to show specific effects at different life stages of individuals. Its purpose was to give DFID a framework with which to identify relevant and cost-effective interventions according to the demographic conditions of the country or area in which they operate.

Using evidence from documented literature, the HEARD/TARSC analysis covers interventions that appear to have greatest positive effect.

Most recommended interventions merely enhance existing agency interventions, whereas these proposals are backed by evidence of public health and social impact

The research contributed to DFID's recently launched AIDS Strategy for HIV and AIDS in the developing world, facilitating the implementation of effective and relevant HIV mitigation strategies where they are most needed.
