Sharing knowledge and transferring skills has been a core principle of HEARD since its inception in 1998. In 2003, HEARD adopted the model of integration, derived from the ethos of sustainable development and drawing upon methodological advances made by the environmental sciences, particularly in the ‘south', to guide the design research projects. This approach led inevitably to an emphasis on collaborative ventures with like-minded organisations. HEARD's approach emphasises learning, shared responsibility, reciprocal obligation and mutual trust.
