2009 Young Researchers Programme

Attending the 4th Southern African AIDS Conference

In 2009 HEARD made a call for abstracts across southern and eastern Africa. Over 40 abstracts were submitted from across the region. Through an intensive selection process 10 young researchers were selected to attend the 4th Southern African AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa.

Over the four days, young researchers were exposed to cutting edge research, networking opportunities and the space to learn and experience the excitement and potential of attending an international AIDS conference.

Young Researchers Mentoring Programme

The Young Researchers are now engaged in a rigorous and academic challenging mentoring process. They are being supported by some of the top HIV/AIDS researchers globally to develop their research and thinking into academic papers that are suitable for publication.

Senior HIV Researchers involved in this programme include:

  • Prof Catherine Campbell, author of Letting Them Die: Why HIV Interventions Fail
  • Dr Kebaabetswe - Senior Clinical Research Scientist on a CDC PrEP study in Botswana
  • Dr Kevin Kelly - executive director of CADRE, and managing editor of African Journal of AIDS Research
  • Dr Olagoke Akintola - Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal
  • Ms Ann Strode - Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, member of the AIDS Care editorial board and Chairperson of the Joint Oxfam HIV/AIDS Programme in South Africa
  • Dr Flora Cornish - Reader, School of Health, Glasgow Caledonian University and recipient of ESRC/DfID funding for research on community mobilisation.

By the end of January 2010 the first set of Young Researcher's work should be submitted to journals and separately published as research working papers by HEARD.

Community spirit in Villa El Salvador

"Do they drink anything apart from tea in England?" That was just one of the questions our students had for us in our first week of teaching at a youth centre in Villa El Salvador, Peru. Although I couldn't entirely deny our love of tea, the children were surprised to find out that, just like [...]

Flipping the classroom – exploiting the digital world

Trapped in my office at dusk, yet another heavy rainstorm sweeps over Harare. I make a start on this post, until the electricity fails and the room is plunged into darkness.
