Initiated early in 2009, the HEARD PhD Scholarship Programme has two broad and interconnected aims; to promote African scholars and scholarship, and to fight HIV/ AIDS. To this end, funding opportunities for PhD research and training in HIV/AIDS have been provided at three South African Universities: the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the University of the Free State and the University of Cape Town. The PhD students, drawn from across the SADC region, will spend three years working towards their doctorates. Fourteen scholarships were awarded to five women and nine men. Six of the students are from Zimbabwe, three from South Africa, two from Malawi and one each from Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda.
One of the objectives of the scholarship programme is to provide the students with a comprehensive academic experience and an enriching study environment as well as academic supervision and guidance. In this respect, funding to attend local HIV/AIDS conferences has been allocated and in 2010 the programme will host a conference with the HEARD PhD scholarship students, their supervisors and international experts in the AIDS arena. The conference will allow the experts to address the students and critique papers on their current research.
HEARD anticipates that the students will return to their countries to take up senior positions in the health sector and government. In this way they will be not only instrumental in working to curb the AIDS epidemic, but will also have input into a broad range of fields covering health promotion and broader regional socio-economic development. HEARD's intention is that they be among the intellectual, civil and political leaders of the future. In fact, one of the conditions of receiving the scholarship is a commitment from the students to remain on the continent for at least two years after graduating. In this way HEARD is confident that the programme will contribute to fostering African scholarship.
The HEARD PhD Enrichment Programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal
An integral part of the study experience in Durban has been the development of the HEARD PhD Enrichment Programme. In addition to regular meetings with their academic supervisors, the students meet approximately once a week with the programme organisers, Professor Eleanor Preston-Whyte and Cailin Hedderwick, for wide ranging discussions. Approximately half the meetings are devoted to interrogating the new frontiers in HIV protection and AIDS treatment. While the research focus is predominantly socio-economic, every effort is made to remain informed about advances in the bio-medical sphere. Here the programme has at its disposal many luminaries in the field who are members of staff of the university.
The remaining meetings are dedicated to reading and discussing a wide range of literature (including novels, short stories, philosophy and poetry) on and about the African continent, as well as comparative literature from other countries in the southern hemisphere. On the suggestion of the students, filmed productions of Shakespeare's plays have been included.
