Young Researchers' Initiative
This initiative links emerging academics in health and HIV-related fields in a scholarship network that supports publication and career development. It does this by building young researchers' capacity in the region through exposure to the latest research on HIV/AIDS. Underlying this is the growing recognition that HIV/AIDS is best tackled through African research, African priorities and African understandings.

Knowledge sharing
Topical issues and evidence on African health and HIV are shared with leaders from the region.
Internships
HEARD introduced internships in 2008. Appointment is on merit, for one year. The focus is on recruiting recently graduated Master's students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. We also accommodate interns from elsewhere, including countries beyond South Africa, subject to feasibility of establishing a link with the university of the applicant. Preference is given to applicants who have conducted HIV/AIDS-related research on topics in line with HEARD's research agenda and programmes.
