Standard Rules:
In 1993, the UN General Assembly adopted the Standard Rules of Equalisation of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities. Although it is not legally binding, this is a pact between various governments to establish a structure that functions to equalize opportunities for people with disabilities. UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is one of the most recent advocacy tools for people with disabilities. After years of negotiating between governments, people with disabilities and other organisations, it was signed on the 30 March 2007.
A second meeting will be conducted in New York in September 2009. This second session will focus on the human rights of persons with disabilities.

This is an easy guide to the UN conventions on the Rights of Persons with disabilities. It is particularly aimed at children but can also be useful to other readers. The Kampala Declaration on Disability and HIV/AIDS
The Kampala Declaration on Disability and HIV/AIDS was initiated at the second meeting of the African Campaign on Disability and HIV/AIDS, in Uganda during March 2008. The declaration aims to raise awareness on vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, and to call on governments to include disability as one of the issues in poverty reduction strategies.
