The XVIII International AIDS Conference was accompanied by a few events that focused on the interrelations of disability and HIV. There were two satellite sessions that focused on people with disabilities and their vulnerability to HIV, one workshop focused on the disabling effects of HIV and a very active networking zone in the Global Village brought the two perspectives into one space. Here you can find out more about the different events.
Disability Networking Zone Accessibility, Inclusion, Disability and Sexuality
The interrelation between disability and HIV has recently been recognised by UNAIDS, yet people with disabilities still lack access to information, treatment, care and support. In addition, with the arrival of ARVs in the South more PLHIV survive and some develop disabilities as a result of their illness. The disability and HIV networking zone at the XVIII International AIDS Conference raised awareness for the interrelation of disability and HIV as well as providing a platform for the exchange of good practice and innovative advocacy ideas. Physical and Cognitive Rehabilitation Following Complications of HIV Disease: Designing and Delivering Services
This workshop explored the challenges facing communities in managing the needs of people living with HIV in settings where treatment is now becoming available, and who are therefore living longer, but with potential HIV related impairments and disabilities. The presenters were rehabilitation professionals from a range of settings. Click here to download the handbook for this session.
AIDS and Disabilities: Country Level Perspectives
This satellite session aimed to increase awareness and knowledge about programmes on AIDS and disabilities, and to present opportunities for strengthening the linkages between the two. It advocated for more collaboration between development actors, donors, national partners and civil society etc. to foster the proliferation, integration and development of inclusive HIV prevention and AIDS programmes for persons with disabilities. AIDS and Disability: Two Years Later
The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities came into force in international law in 2008. In the same year, the Mexico City AIDS conference was the first IAC to include disability issues in the main conference programme. Two years later, this session asked "Where are we now?" Notable AIDS activists, disability advocates and human rights campaigners gathered for an interactive session to review and analyse the progress made and obstacles encountered in the push to fulfil the vision of the CRPD in the field of HIV/AIDS. Press Conference: Disability, a New Field in HIV and AIDS Programming
It is estimated that 650 million people, or 10% of the world's population, have a disability, many of them living in resource-poor settings with limited access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. Few HIV prevalence studies include people with disabilities. Those that do, indicate that people with disabilities are as likely or more likely to have been infected with HIV. On the other side of the coin more and more people experience disablement as a result of their HIV infection and treatment. This is also an under researched area and in resource poor settings there are very few rehabilitative services that address this issue. The IDDC task group on disability and HIV and the initiative from Health Canada and GPDD therefore conducted the following press conference. Click here for the press release.
