Afrinead Conference - The ABC of research evidence-to-action: putting UNCRDP principles into action for rights-based change

Following its first conference in 2007, the Centre for Rehabilitation Studies at Stellenbosch University hosted the second African Network for Evidence-to-Action on Disability (AfriNEAD) symposium from 30 November to 3 December 2009 in Cape Town. The theme of the symposium was The ABC of research evidence-to-action: putting UNCRDP principles into action for rights-based change. The symposium had a side session that focused on HIV and disability and presentations. For more information about the symposium visit: www.afrinead.org.

Health, HIV/AIDS and Community-Based Rehabilitation Commission

Session 1a: HIV/AIDS and Disability
Chair: Dr Jill Hanass-Hancock - HEARD, South Africa

  1. Key Note Speaker: Paul Chappel - Create, South Africa

    Paul Chappel, who acquired a spinal cord injury after a car accident, is a qualified nurse and holds a Master degree in Community Disability Studies from London. He works as a project co-ordinator at Create in South Africa, where he implements sex and HIV education programmes for youngsters with disabilities as well as disability sensitisation training for VCT counsellors. He is currently reading for his PHD which focuses on the area of HIV/AIDS and disability. His keynote address focused on common concepts around disability, HIV and sexuality.   2. Presenter 1: Stine Hellum Braathen - SINTEF, Norway

    Stine Hellum Braathen is a researcher at the SINTEF Department of Global Health and Welfare and holds a Master degree in International Community Health. Her area of expertise is in health system research, with a particular focus in access to health services for vulnerable groups especially women with disabilities and violence against women with disabilities. She presented the qualitative part of a study conducted by SINTEF, the University of Stellenbosch and HSRC in South Africa. The presentation highlighted the barrier people with disabilities face while trying to access HIV prevention, treatment and care. Click here to download her presentation.

  3. Presenter 2: Dr Margaret Wazakili - University of Stellenbosch, South Africa

    Dr Margaret Wazakili obtained her PHD in 2008 from the Centre for Rehabilitation Studies at the University of Stellenbosch. Her work focuses on disability and HIV as well as on poverty reduction strategies in African countries. She presented an in-depth study of South African township youth with disabilities. She highlighted the perceptions that these youth held about sexuality and HIV. Click here to download her presentation.

  4. Presenter 3: Rebecca Johns - Western Cape Forum for Intellectual Disability, South Africa

    Rebecca Johns holds a Master degree in Inclusive Education and support services from the University of Western Cape. She initially studied drama and worked in theatre education and applied this approach to sexuality education for learners with intellectual disabilities. She is the author of the first sexuality and life skill education programme for youngsters with disabilities in South Africa (see also our library and resource collection). Johns presented a study that focused on residential facilities for people with intellectual disabilities in Cape Town, South Africa. The study focused on the management of HIV testing.   5. Presenter 4: Brenda Motobo - Liverpool VCT, Kenya

    Brenda Motobo holds a Master degree in Public Health. She works for Liverpool VCT in Kenya, which is well known for its peer counselling in the deaf community. She presented a qualitative study that looked into the HIV-knowledge, attitude and practice of people with disabilities in Kenya. Click here to download her presentation.

  6. Presenter 5: Irma Johnson - Western Cape Department of Health, South Africa

    Irma Johnson holds a Master degree in Rehabilitation from the University of Stellenbosch. She works as a district monitoring officer at the Western Cape Department of Health in South Africa and currently works very closely with community-based service programmes. She presented a study that focused on the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of the religious sector. Click here to download her presentation.
