As reported in 2006, HEARD was one the partners awarded funding by DFID to run a research programme consortium. The lead organisation and the administrative hub is the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine; the other partners are the Health Research Unit in Ghana, the New York-based Population Council, the Regional AIDS Training Network (RATN) from Kenya, and REACH, a Malawian NGO called Research on Equity and Community Health.
In 2007 this support was particularly valuable in carrying out work in Swaziland and developing staff capacity. In addition, it allowed Alan Whiteside to continue and complete the long overdue manuscript for A Very Short Introduction to HIV/AIDS for Oxford University Press, being released in 2008.

Orphan Meeting
This project is part of a DFID-funded Research Partners Consortium. In late January 2008 HEARD convened a meeting to examine how tools could be adapted and used across the region. The meeting was attended by delegates from the Population Council in New York, the Health Research Unit in Ghana, REACH from Malawi and Regional AIDS Training Network (RATN) in Nairobi, as well as HEARD staff from Durban and Newcastle. The report on the meeting is available here
